One of the key skills a BA needs to possess is Problem Solving. Problem solving is however not just a BA skill but a life skill, hence it is to be valued and developed by all.
To solve problems effectively a BA must do the following well:
- Identify and define the problem – First you must ascertain there is a problem and then proceed to define it. Often times knowledge gaps are disguised as problems. The business analyst must confirm that a problem exists and from that define what is required to solve the problem. You do this by questioning and investigating the situation. Remember you can’t solve a problem until you are asking the right questions.
- Generating solution options- Once the problem or need is defined, the business analyst must then consider options for solving the problem. Options can range from a completely new solution or an adjustment to an existing solution. It is important to consider a range of perspectives when generation option. Remember, there are many ways to skin a cat. A problem generally has more than one solution or there is more than one way to achieve a goal.
- Evaluating and selecting solution options – Every option available should be considered along with the pros and cons involved. It is important to have a clear set of priorities against which you will assess the options. In doing this the best option based on the set priorities will naturally emerge. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said “Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least.” This is very true when deciding how to proceed with options.
- Implementing solutions – once an option is selected and the wheels to solve the problem has been set in motion, the Business Analyst must ensure the needs (requirements) are clearly translated to those who will implement it and that the focus remains on the requirements to ensure the solution solves the problem originally defined. It is important to remember that life is not static and things change. Continued focus on the needs will naturally lead to the detection of changes that might impact the implementation of the solution.
