Converting ideas into action

Do you struggle to turn ideas into action? Many of us are great at generating ideas but not at bringing an idea to life. As a Business Analyst, one thing I had to get really good at was bringing ideas or solution proposals to life. When a problem is defined and a solution is found, one of the hardest things to do is to implement the solution!

Here are a few things that I have found helpful in implementing an idea. Its a WHY-WHAT-HOW-WHO-WHEN approach:

Get Clarity

If you are a natural innovator, generating Ideas will be easy however it is very easy to get excited and spiral out of control. You need to create boundaries and clearly define what the scope of your idea is. Think carefully about Why. Understanding why will help you determine if the idea is not only a great one but the right one. Great ideas can become the wrong idea if the timing or circumstances are wrong. Getting clear on why will help you confirm you have the right idea and help you pitch your idea successfully to those who will help or partner with you to implement it.

Get Perspective

Perspectives are useful for finding and closing any gaps in your idea. Having others involved in reviewing your idea will give you valuable insights. Your idea will become richer when you consider things from a variety of vantage points. Take the perspectives on board and carefully consider them but never forget your WHY. Let your Why be the anchor for your idea.

Focus on what needs to be done

Once you are confident you have the right idea, enriched by a variety of perspectives you can start to think about what you need to do. What are the key goals that you must meet? Think about the objectives that will link back to your WHY.

Plan

If you are confident you understand WHY and WHAT you need to do to implement your idea, then you’re ready to bring it to life. Think about how you will execute what needs to be done and who you will need to do it. Don’t forget to think about when you will need things to be done. Create a plan that outlines WHO is doing WHAT, WHEN. If you spend enough time planning you will find bringing your ideas to life easier. Think about what could go wrong and plan your response in advance.

I hope you have found this useful. Remember, a great idea isn’t always the right idea. To be successful you just need to find the right idea.
