BA Toolkit Series: Influence

Influence as a tool to effect change

A business analyst is an agent of change. To effect change you must be able to influence others. Influence is one of the most powerful qualities a Business Analyst can deploy to be successful in their role. As a business analyst, you’re often responsible for activities that require your stakeholders to change or adopt something new. This can become challenging when you have a variety of stakeholders with differing opinions about what needs to happen or how it should happen. Some of the stakeholders might be senior, therefore the Business Analyst will need influence to achieve the desired outcomes.

Here are 3 ways to strengthen your power of influence.

Build Trust

Without trust, it will be extremely difficult to influence people. Trust is built from competence and character. First you must be capable of delivering what is expected of you. Next, you must have the character to back it up. Do your homework and know your stuff. Honesty, Integrity, transparency, consistency, commitment and communication must be hallmarks of your character. When you are able to demonstrate these characteristics, you will capture the attention of your stakeholders who will be inclined to follow your lead.

Inspire Confidence

This goes hand in hand with trust. You can influence others to achieve objectives successfully, by developing a personal presence that enables others connect with you naturally and sincerely. People with an expressive personality type have this ability naturally. Read our blog about personality types for more information on this. Confidence is also inspired when you are able to communicate and demonstrate knowledge of the domain in which you are operating. You don’t have to have all the answers but be willing to explore and seek to understand.

Clear Communication

Without clear communication, it will be difficult to influence an outcome. Communication is the vehicle that transforms information into ideas and influence is the vehicle that transforms ideas into actions which bring the desired outcomes. Communication goes beyond the words we speak or write. It is a two-way process which includes body language and listening. Seek to make connections by appealing to the heart with empathy and to the head with facts. It is very important be aware of how you communicate to ensure the message is clear. Read our blog on communication for more information.

At the end of the day, developing your influencing capabilities will pay dividends beyond getting the task at hand done. It will further boost your reputation as a Business Analyst.
