Skills 101 – Problem Solving

One of the key skills a Business Analyst needs to possess is Problem Solving.

Partnership is Key to successful Problem Solving.

The AuthenticBA

To solve problems effectively a BA must do the following well:

Identify and Define the problem

First you must ascertain there is a problem and then proceed to define it. Often times knowledge gaps are disguised as problems. The business analyst must confirm that a problem exists and then define the requirements of the situation.

Generating solution options

Once the problem or need is defined, The business analyst must then consider options for solving the problem. Options can range from a completely new solution or an adjustment to an existing solution. It is important to consider a range of perspectives when generating options. Do this while partnering with your stakeholders.

Evaluating and selecting solution options

Every option available should be considered along with the pros and cons involved. It is important to have a clear set of priorities against which you will assess the options. In doing this the best option based on the set priorities will naturally emerge.

Implementing solutions

Once an option is selected and the wheels to solve the problem has been set in motion, the Business Analyst must ensure the need (requirements) are clearly translated to those who will implement it and that the focus remains on the requirements to ensure the solution solves the problem originally defined. It is important to remember that life is not static and things change. Continued focus on the needs will naturally lead to the detection of changes that might impact the implementation of the solution.
